Football hysteria has hit Berlin in full swing today as Germany plays its first World Cup match of 2014 against Portugal. For the Germany matches, Berliners will be pouring out of work onto the streets, watching the match from every Späti, bar and beer garden.
If you still haven’t decided on a venue to watch the football in, here are some recommendations:
Berliner Fan Meile
Where: Straße des 17. Juni
Straße des 17. Juni will open daily from 13:00 to host 100,000 football fans. A 700 meter stretch from the Brandenburger Tor to the Siegessaule will be cordoned off. The main screen of the „fan mile“ will be at the Brandenburger Tor but others will be scattered throughout the street. Workers in Mitte might be able to squeeze in before kick off.

This bar has big screens inside the venue with comfy couches on two levels. If you want to watch the match outside in the evening sun, there are also seats and screens on the footpath overlooking the Volksbühne.
Where: Kastanienallee 7-9, 10435 Berlin
Prater is Berlin’s oldest beer garden and for the World Cup it will be decked out with large screens to accommodate 600 football fans. For a good atmosphere, nice food and twinkle lights, it doesn’t get better than Prater.
FC Union Berlin
Where: An der Wuhlheide 263, 12555 Berlin
Price: €2 and up
FC Union Berlin has turned its stadium into a living room for the duration of the World Cup season. Fans were invited to bring their own couches to the stadium to make them feel at home while watching the matches. On Thursday over 12,000 Berliners watched the opening ceremony from the stadium.
Haus der Kulturen der Welt
Where: John-Foster-Dulles-Allee 10, 10557 Berlin
The Haus der Kulturen der Welt will be streaming World Cup matches until the 13th of July with free admission for fans. As part of their world cup events, the HKW have also organised concerts with Brazilian composer Sergio Mendes (7th July) who has worked with Justin Timberlake and Stevie Wonder.

BadFish is a late night, New York style bar in Prenzlauer Berg with free popcorn. The venue which is known for it’s craft beers and good cocktails will be screening the world cup all month.
